Clara Furse, the former chief executive of the London Stock Exchange who famously defended the UK bourse against numerous takeover attempts, is to chair the ringfenced retail operations of HSBC.

HSBC confirmed her appointment in a November 1 statement, in which it said Furse will become non-executive chair of the unit from April 2017 for an initial three-year term.
