Colin Powell, the former US secretary of state, has joined Californian venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, one of the early investors in Google and still one of the internet search engine's largest shareholders.

Powell is already an investor in Kleiner Perkins funds and joins as a strategic limited partner, a role created specifically for him.
