Comment: Will Obama's choice for SEC leader add bite to its bark?

The expected annointment today by President-elect Barack Obama of a Republican, Mary Schapiro, to lead the US market watchdog during his first term of office is brave. It is particularly brave given how quickly the regulator became a house divided by its commissioners' party allegiances when it last considered regulating hedge funds.

Schapiro will face many challenges, and so may not be comforted by the past form of the Securities & Exchange Commission.
