Commission hints at lifting barrier to mobile consolidation

The European Commission (EC) has given hope to investors and bankers hoping for consolidation in Europe's mobile phone market with a report calling for lighter regulation of the sector.

The commission suggested in the report that bans on spectrum trading be reconsidered. The bans, which prevent operators in some jurisdictions from selling the right to use certain frequencies, have been a major obstacle to mergers and acquisitions activity among mobile networks in Europe.
