It is always one of the (admittedly few) pleasures of financial awards ceremonies to watch celebrity comperes marvelling at the bizarre world in which they briefly find themselves.

Jeremy Vine, the BBC presenter and journalist, made a pretty good fist of it at last week's Investment Week fund manager of the year awards, even offering at one stage to discuss investment trends in continental Europe if his jokes failed to go down well with the audience.
