Covid infection rate slowing as R number drops below 1 for first time since lockdown

London's R number now one of the lowest in the country, between 0.7 and 0.9

The reproduction rate, or R number, for the UK has fallen to between 0.8 and 1.0, marking the first time it has fallen below the crucial 1.0 mark since lockdown began earlier this month.

It decreased from between 1.2 and 1.3 a week earlier, the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) said on 22 January.
