Credit derivatives could put financial system at risk

New entrants to the credit derivatives market are in danger of underestimating the potential risks of using the products, and could unhinge the entire financial system, according to new research from consultant McKinsey and Company.

McKinsey said the dangers were principally in the market's opacity. In the past it was clear which party took on the credit risk, but credit derivatives typically cover a broad portfolio of debt from numerous corporations.
