Custodians fear Basel III insurance rules

The indemnifications that custodians offer to securities lending clients are under threat from new regulation

Custodian banks are warning that the new Basel III financial reforms could push up the cost of securities lending and impact market liquidity.

They are concerned that new rules covering leverage ratios will increase the price for custodian banks of insuring against the default of those borrowing stock.
