CVC Capital Partners is understood to have entered exclusive negotiations to buy El Árbol, the troubled Spanish supermarket chain, from Dutch company Laurus.

Sources close to El Árbol say CVC has exclusivity on the purchase until October 15. The deal would mark CVC's second investment in Spain, and its fourth investment in the retail sector this year. But the situation at El Árbol is very different from CVC's earlier investments.
