In February of this year, Sir David Walker, the 60-year-old executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Europe, broke his hip when he slipped on some ice while attending the Davos economic forum.

Fortunately, it was a rare slip-up in a career which started nearly 40 years ago.
