Antimicrobial smoke machines and electrostatic guns – Covid-era gyms await the City’s workers

No hugging, no chatting, no chest pumping – and forget about the fresh towels

Antimicrobial smoke machines and electrostatic guns – Covid-era gyms await the City’s workers

In the dimly lit "Red Room", Barry’s Bootcamp instructors shouted commands while marching down neat rows of sweaty City workers at the Canary Wharf gym. The mass of bodies moved in unison; lifting, spinning and sprinting. A shared goal united determined groups of bankers, traders and accountants making the most of their lunch break.

But the utopian space was abruptly shut when the government imposed lockdown in March to force the nation indoors in a bid to combat Covid-19. The City's fitness fanatics have since contented themselves with home-workouts. Dumbbells and kettlebells sold out, Joe Wicks taught PE to the nation, and suddenly everyone thought they were preparing for Tour De France.
