For a few brief moments last week, it looked as though Jean-Claude Trichet's past had caught up with him as governor of the European Central Bank. Viewers of BBC News saw a headline flash up on their screens: "ECB chief to step down."

Had Trichet been dragged back into the Crédit Lyonnais scandal that had threatened his appointment in the first place? Had he gone the same way as Ernst Welteke, former governor of the Bundesbank who had to leave after accepting hospitality from a German bank? Er, no.
