The Irish Stock Exchange ISEQ Index would be down just 1% rather than by more than 20% if it were not for the tumble in value of Élan, the Irish pharmaceuticals company, according to a study by the exchange.

Between December 31, 2001 and July 10, the ISEQ was down about 21%, according to indicative figures calculated by the exchange.
