Equities boost bulge bracket banks despite downturn

Three of Wall Street's bulge bracket firms have exceeded expectations in the first quarter of 2003 by growing revenues in their equities businesses as well as making big gains in fixed income.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers have all recorded first-quarter gains in their equities business despite vastly reduced trading volumes in the US and Europe.
