Global equity-linked issues so far this year have reached a record $167bn (€136bn) overtaking the previous total of $165bn set in 2001, according to UBS.

The bank said that the flurry of issues in December already makes it the fourth largest month of 2003 for global issuance, the second largest in Europe and the largest in Japan.
