Privatisation is caught between the need for cash and fear of the unions

Do not believe that Jacques Chirac is right wing. And don't assume that he is on the left. Chirac is the perfect example of that French peculiarity: neither left nor right but suspended somewhere in between.

He represents an age-old mixture of state intervention and free market economics. That this system has been exposed and undermined by the European Union and globalisation does not prevent the French political elite clinging to it.
