Steven Maijoor, the chair of the European Securities and Markets Authorities, has highlighted the important role shadow banking could play in financial markets but warned it “needs to be properly regulated and supervised”.

Speaking at the annual International Securities Lending Association conference, held this week in Prague, Maijoor said securities lending and other activities that are classed as "shadow banking" bring "complexities to the financial markets".
