The head of Europe's top securities watchdog has called for a strengthening of the region's capital markets to help support economic growth and reduce reliance on bank funding.

Speaking at the Asian Financial Forum in Hong Kong earlier this week, Steven Maijoor, chairman of the European Securities and Markets Authority, said policies are needed to increase the proficiency of Europe's capital markets.
