The European Commission last night dealt a blow to Spanish power firm Endesa in its battle against a €22bn ($25.6bn) hostile bid from rival Gas Natural, by referring the case back to Spain's competition authorities.

Reuters reports that Endesa had expected the European Commission to take a more sympathetic view of its objections to the transaction than the Spanish regulator.
