EU clears Hewlett-Packard-Compaq merger

Hewlett-Packard and Compaq welcomed the decision of the European Commission to clear their merger, and analysts suggested that the shareholder vote in March will be a close run thing.

Unconditional clearance from the EC for the merger to go ahead gave management of the two companies the chance to claim that the merger was gaining momentum. The Commission decided that the merged company would be in no position to hike prices for its products.
