The European Commission is gearing itself up to accelerate financial markets reform across the EU with a raft of new proposals which Commission president Romano Prodi said will set the stage for creating a truly integrated European financial market.
"For the first time that vision is within reach. One money and one single capital market with one set of financial rules... At last real change is underway," he said. The EC has set itself a deadline of the end of 2003 to integrate European securities markets and 2005 to implement a single financial services market in Europe.
