EU considers tougher rules for auditors

Auditors will face tougher responsibilities and be held increasingly accountable for ensuring accuracy and reliability under new European Commission proposals designed to guard against corporate scandals.

Frits Bolkestein, the internal markets commissioner, said: "Auditors are our major line of defence again crooks who want to cook the books. Parmalat was a reminder of what happened when that defence failed.
