EU to forge ahead with controversial accounting rules

The European Commission has endorsed controversial new rules for derivatives accounting but it has temporarily left out the most contentious provisions after strong opposition from European banks.

The new rules, international accounting standard 39, will apply to all the EU's 7,000 listed companies from 1 January 2005 for their consolidated accounts. The excluded clauses relate to the use of the full fair value option and hedge accounting.
