The European Commission has cleared the break-up sale of Blu, Italy's fourth largest mobile phone operator, reversing an initial condition that the company should only be sold as a whole.

The change of heart was imposed on the Commission by the current slump in the telecoms market and because no single buyer could be found. In a statement, the Commission said it made its decision after receiving commitments at the end of July from leading Italian telecommunications companies and from Italy's government.
