European Court overrules commission twice in a week

Commissioner Monti acknowledges setbacks

For the second time in a week the European Court of First Instance has overturned a controversial EU Commission veto of a merger, dealing another severe blow to the competition authorities and increasing pressure for radical reform of merger controls.

The court ruled on Friday that the commission was wrong to veto the takeover bid by Tetra Laval, the paper packaging firm, for Sidel, a French plastic bottling company.
