F&C returns to lending as FSA issues short selling caution

Foreign & Colonial Management plans to return to the securities lending market in a move that coincides with the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) cautioning institutions against abusive short-selling practices.

Securities lending is the temporary loan of securities to support trading activities of hedge funds and proprietary trading desks. The latter borrow stocks for short selling strategies, where a stock is sold with an obligation to buy it back at a later time hoping to capitalise of a fall in price.
