Funds of funds are like lemmings in their tendency to chase the same pool of top-performing buyout firms for their clients, according to one investor who said the vehicles must find new ways to differentiate themselves from rivals.

It is six months since it emerged UK investor SL Capital raised the biggest European fund of funds in more than a year with a €630m vehicle. Since then the fund of funds industry has had little to cheer about.
