Fewer but bigger deals for funds industry in 2009

The number of mergers and acquisitions in the funds industry declined by a third last year but 2009 still marked a watershed for megadeals in the sector - a record nine transactions involved groups with over $100bn (€70bn) under management.

There were 143 deals last year, down from 219 in 2008, according to analysis by the financial institutions group of investment bank Jefferies & Company.
