Fidelity spins off short-selling unit

Fidelity Investments, the US asset management firm, has spun off a business unit that uses techniques including short selling to run money on behalf of Fidelity's richest employees.

The Geode Investors unit, which was founded two years ago, has now become a separate company. Market sources said the timing of the spin-off is significant as it coincides with regulatory probes into hedge funds across the globe.
