The Ford Foundation, a $12 billion US endowment, shook up the world of charity finance yesterday with a pledge to put up to $1 billion of its portfolio into investments - not handouts - that do good in the world.

Impact investing isn't a new idea - the Ford Foundation has been doing it since 1968 - but always from the "grants" side of its operation, where there's a lower hurdle for financial returns.
