A fund manager-led campaign to get the UK government to issue its first green bonds has cleared its first hurdle, with Treasury officials agreeing to discuss the matter.

Earlier in May, Columbia Threadneedle Investments wrote to City minister John Glen and Sir Robert Stheeman, the head of the Treasury’s Debt Management Office, calling on the government to issue the first “green gilts” — government bonds whose proceeds would be used exclusively for environmental projects.
