Future of European takeover directive still in doubt

The fate of the European takeover directive is still hanging in the balance after meetings with the European Parliament and European Council failed to reach any conclusions.

One of the main topics of conversation was the issue of poison pills being used in hostile takeover bids. Some members of the European Parliament (MEPs), such as Germany's Klaus-Heiner Lehne, have been pushing to make it easier for companies to defend themselves in takeover situations by using poison pill tactics without gaining prior shareholder approval.
