General Motors close to junk as S&P downgrades

General Motors, the troubled US auto maker, stands one step away from a junk debt rating after a downgrade from Standard & Poor's.

S&P has cut General Motor's credit rating to BBB-, its lowest investment grade rating. The action followed a set of poor third quarter results which included plans to lay off 12,000 staff in Europe.
