Germany’s Commerzbank swings to loss, but protected by strong sovereign

Negative interest rates and high costs have hit the bank’s profits

It’s good to be a German bank, Commerzbank said on 13 May despite swinging to a first-quarter loss due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Commerzbank financial chief Bettina Orlopp said generous government programmes and good control of the virus outbreak in Germany translates into companies and private borrowers being less hit. Assuming no second lockdown, it expects revenue in customer business to stay largely stable this year.
