The investment landscape was radically different in the autumn of 2007, the last time we caught up with John Hathaway, manager of the $1.4bn (€1.7bn) Tocqueville Gold Fund.

For one thing, the price of the metal was tipping the scales at $738 an ounce, some 40% below where it's trading today.
