Goldman Sachs is to underwrite almost a third of a surprise £1bn (€1.4bn) rights issue from Prudential, the UK insurance giant, alongside the group's two corporate brokers, UBS and Cazenove.

Prudential's issue is the largest UK rights issue for two years and the third largest in Europe this year, according to Dealogic, the investment banking research provider.
