Skandia, the Swedish insurance giant, has hired Goldman Sachs to defend itself against a £3.4bn (€4.7bn) hostile bid from UK insurer Old Mutual. It has dropped long-term adviser Morgan Stanley.

A spokeswoman for Skandia confirmed that Goldman Sachs had been hired to replace Morgan Stanley.
