Goldman Sachs London staff shell-shocked as job cuts hit: ‘There were a lot of tears’

Goldman Sachs moved into its high-tech Plumtree Court office three years ago, but scenes at its UK headquarters on 11 January were a throwback to 2008.

As the rain lashed outside, hundreds of bankers and traders in the £1bn City base were told that their jobs were at risk. Many senior bankers had been informed of their fate earlier in the week, insiders told Financial News, and the more junior staff facing the axe were cut with little fanfare.
