Christine Lagarde’s first speech as European Central Bank president on November 4 was a tribute to Wolfgang Schäuble, the intransigent former German finance minister who was being honoured with an award from the association of German magazine publishers.

Lagarde, Schäuble’s former counterpart from the days when she was France’s finance minister 10 years ago, had been asked to give the keynote laudatory speech.
