Housing secretary Robert Jenrick has said the government may “need to go further” on lockdown restrictions across the UK, after scientists said they had warned ministers of the need for stricter rules “weeks ago”.

Local leaders hit back at the government’s new three-tier lockdown system late on 12 October, saying they had not been consulted enough on the rules despite assurances from Prime Minister Boris Johnson that they would be included in the discussions.
