Home secretary Priti Patel announced the changes, while police say they will no longer 'waste time trying to reason' with rulebreakers

'The science is clear, such irresponsible behaviour poses a significant threat to public health,' said home secretary Priti Patel, who announced the changes at a press conference on 21 January

The government is to start cracking down on people who break lockdown rules to host large gatherings, with fines being increased to a maximum of £6,400 for repeat offenders.

From next week, a new £800 fine will be introduced for those attending house parties of more than 15 people, which will double for each repeated offence up to a maximum penalty of £6,400. These fines will be handed out to all in attendance.
