The Credit Suisse First Boston/Tremont Hedge Fund index beat the S&P 500, posting returns of -0.6% against traditional equity market returns of -9.2% in February's market decline.
Robert Sloan, chief executive officer of CSFB/Tremont index, said: "Hedge funds managed to limit losses for broadly diversified investors during the market sell-off in February. Unfortunately the major indices suffered significant damage, as did long-only portfolios."
