Rallies in healthcare and energy stocks boosted hedge fund performance in September, pushing the industry closer to a "perfect" 2017, according to Hedge Fund Research.

Average hedge funds returns were 0.5% last month, bringing year-to-date performance across the industry to 8.5% at the end of the third quarter, according to HFR's index that tracks sector returns.
