Hedge funds’ returns lag the markets

Only short-biased funds lost money last year but the sector still struggled to keep pace with the markets

Hedge funds barely kept pace with markets last year, rising 8.5% as the S&P 500 index rose 10% and the FTSE 100 went up 9.4%.

Figures from data provider Hedge Fund Research show that on December 17 the industry was on course for its eighth-worst performance since records began 21 years ago, based on its non-investable and investable indices.
