Hedge funds returned -0.8% in September, according to the Credit Suisse First Boston/Tremont index, at a time when the equity markets were experiencing severe turbulence in the wake of the attacks on the US.

The Dow Jones Industrial Index was down -11.1% during September, while the S&P 500 returned -8.2%. For the year, hedge funds posted returns of 2.2%, while the Dow Jones and S&P 500 posted -18% and -21.2%, respectively.
