The Hong Kong government and Chinese media have backed HSBC chief executive Noel Quinn after he strongly defended the bank’s record in the face of a grilling from UK MPs.

Quinn told the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee on 26 January that it is not his role to make moral or political judgements. He faced the questioning in front of UK lawmakers after criticism the global bank had locked Hong Kong democracy activists out of their accounts upon requests from the Hong Kong police.
