At the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, October 2016, the alarm on James O’Shea’s bedside table was going off, but he was already awake. As it continued to ring, he realised he was unable to leave his room.

O’Shea was mentally and physically exhausted, he says. He called his wife in Ireland, wrote a resignation letter and then sent it via BlackBerry.
