HSBC is pushing ahead with plans to strip out layers of management from its European business, even as the bank pauses the vast majority of its planned 35,000 job cuts.

In a memo to staff from European chief executive Nuno Matos, who was installed in the job in February, HSBC said that the bank was embarking on a plan to simplify its business in the region.
