India denies access to hedge funds

India's Committee on Capital Markets, the country's top regulatory body, yesterday denied overseas hedge funds direct access to domestic exchanges amid fears that they will destabilise the markets.

The committee rejected a proposal made in June by the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the regulator, to broaden the definition of foreign institutional investors to include hedge funds.
