Hurricane Laura has already been downgraded to a tropical storm, but for the insurance industry the work of calculating the financial damage is just getting started.

The handful of firms that create models of likely payouts from natural catastrophes are already using as a guide the damage wrought by previous storms that hit the same stretch of coast along the Gulf of Mexico.
